What is this “Rev” thing, anyway?
We are Oxford Revelation Rock-Gospel Choir, part of an international group of Christian based rock-gospel choirs where everyone is welcome no matter what their ability, talents or beliefs. The aim is to create an environment where friendships can be built and hidden abilities drawn out; Revelation is more than just a choir.
Our aims and values are outlines in the Aims and Values document.
What sort of music do you sing?
We sing a mix of gospel music, worship music and pop music. We aim to have a decent mix of Christian and secular music. Above all, we go for music that is funky, soulful and fun.
What if I can’t read music?
We teach songs by singing them to you and getting you to repeat them back, not by getting you to look at a load of blobs with sticks on. So you don’t need to read music. Even if you want to teach a song yourself, there will be people more than willing to help if you need written music that you can’t read.
What if I can’t sing?
Don’t be so sure! It’s amazing what people can do in a group. But even if you really, really, really can’t sing, it doesn’t matter! The choir is open to everyone, from the tone-deaf to the sickeningly talented. And the incredible thing is that it still sounds great to the audience in a concert - enthusiasm is everything!
Besides, even if you don’t want to sing, you’re welcome to come along to rehearsals and listen, and perhaps clap, sway and smile. We have said to people who haven’t been to any rehearsals, “Come and be in our concert! You just have to clap and sway, and smile!”
What if I can’t commit to a rehearsal every week?
There is no committment with our choir. If you can only make one rehearsal a term, that’s fine. If you only start coming in 8th week, that’s fine. We’d love to have you there whenever you can make it.
We don’t have auditions, we don’t have any pre-requisites and we don’t have a list of “signed-up” members. If you want to have fun singing gospel (and other fun) music, just pop along to a rehearsal.
When do you rehearse?
Rehearsals this term will be on Tuesdays from 7.30pm - 9.30pm at Corpus Christi College, in the NMR (New Music Room). See the directions if you don’t know where Corpus Christi is.
If you want to be kept up to date with rehearsal reminders, sign up to the mailing list.
How do I get there?
Corpus Christi is on Merton St, just off the High St. If you go along the High St from Carfax (ie: from the centre of town), there is a road on the right between Sheppard & Woodward and Oddbins.
Head down that road and follow it round to the left in front of the iron railings. Corpus is now on your right - the main entrance is the first door you come across.
If you go in, there will hopefully either be signs to the New Music Room or a person to show you the way. If not, you can ask the friendly porters in the lodge (just on the right inside the entrance).
This map may be helpful: location of Corpus Christi College on Multimap.
If you know where Oriel, Christ Church, Merton and Christ Church Meadows are, Corpus is right in the middle, between them all.
How do I sign up?
To keep up-to-date on what we’re doing, including getting reminders about rehearsals, join our mailing list. You can do this by going to our GroupSpaces page and clicking “Add to My Groups”. You may need to register and/or sign in.
Other than that, just turn up to a rehearsal. You don’t need to give us warning that you are coming, and you don’t need to pay anything.
